Google Domains sold; existing domains to Squarespace

Google has unexpectedly announced that it will discontinue Google Domains, its domain registration service. The service will be sold to Squarespace, the world’s largest domain registrar after GoDaddy, Namecheap, and Tucows, for $180 million. The more than 10 million customers who currently have domains registered with Google Domains will be moved to Squarespace in the coming months. The press release shows that Google wants to focus more on its core tasks.

“In keeping with our efforts to sharpen our focus, we have entered into a definitive agreement with Squarespace for the acquisition of customer accounts of the Google Domains registrar business”, says Matt Madrigal, Vice President and General Manager, Merchant Shopping of Google.

The move to sell Google Domains comes as a surprise to many, especially since Google Domains has only left beta and officially launched since March 2022. Google Domains was praised by many for its simple interface and ease of registering a dot com domain.
